Yes!

We were blessed to have delegates arrive from Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Congo, and Rwanda this morning to kick off the second University Advisors Summit.

We will be blogging the Summit. Hopefully we can put it on the LivingStone website: http://LivingStone.ac.ug

Dawat Khana, Rooftop Dining

Dawat Khana is our new favorite restaurant in town. It is 50′ down an alley, through a tall metalic gate, and up a rickety set of iron steps. A few weeks ago, the two tiny and crowded dining rooms were full of noisy guests watching TV. Laura and I were about to leave and take our weekly date night somewhere else when one of the waiters asked us if we wanted to go up on the roof. I love to climb on the roofs of things anyway, so I quickly agreed. Up one dark and dusty interior stairwell, and we were on the roof!

The sun was already setting, so it was not too hot. There was a gentle breeze, and the raucous street noises were strangely muted. With no walls or ceiling other than the sky, the atmosphere was decidedly romantic! We had a lovely view over Mbale and could see the cliffs of Wanale unobstructed.

We were also in position to see a rather humorous ad painted by a orthographically challenged signwriter. Ugandans associate the letter “e” with the long a sound as in “hey.” That explains how the author intended to tout the “taste” of the hot chocolate powder rather than refer to more private part of the male anatomy.

Resolution

One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to double the amount of attention I give to my blog.

That means I’ll be updating it twice a year now.

Visitors from Harding

A few weeks ago we were blessed to have Shawn, Donna, and Kenna Daggett in our home. Shawn and Donna were leading a group of Harding students who spent a semester studying in Zambia. At the end of their term, they traveled through Uganda and Rwanda visiting missionaries. The Daggetts were our first liaison family when we moved to Mbale in 1998. It was really neat to see them here and renew our relationship! Part of the group stayed in Jinja, and part came to Mbale. When we returned the students to Jinja, we also met Mark Berryman and Janice Bingham. Mark was the intern coordinator at Harding when we surveyed India, Uganda, and Togo in 1996. Janice is a long-time friend of Laura’s family and was a major inspiration for Laura considering mission work. We were so glad to meet these four dear friends again after so long.

Turtle Bay

Back in October we went on vacation with the Proctors, McCullums, Diana and Lori. We stayed at our favorite place: Turtle Bay Beach Club in Watumu, Kenya. The kids love the pool, sand, and ocean. Mom and Dad love the peacefulness and good service. We rode the overnight train from Nairobi to Mombasa (14-17 hours). It has a dining car, and we ate dinner and breakfast on the train. Great fun!
